St. Albans Town Educational Center (SATEC) is located in suburban St. Albans, Vermont. St. Albans Town is on beautiful Lake Champlain, and about 15 miles from the Canadian border. Our town has a blend of agricultural, commercial, industrial and residential uses. Many of our residents commute to work in Burlington, about 30 miles south.
This is our 11th year as a PK-8 school and we have about 700 students. In order to keep that “small school” feeling, the students are grouped into ten “houses” that have 4-5 classes in each. Each house varies in grade make-up, from single to multi-grades. Our classroom configuration also offers a variety of placements, from single grade, multi-age, two-person team teaching and “looping” (keeping the same teacher for two years). These options are available at some grade levels.
SATEC staff work together as a team to help students achieve the Vermont Standards. St. Albans Town Educational Center is a place where all students and staff can be successful academically, socially and emotionally in a positive, caring and safe environment that respects individuality and promotes collaboration. We use a (VT) standards based reporting system, and operate on a trimester schedule, with parent conferences twice a year. Special education and remedial staff collaborate with teachers to assist students with learning challenges, and the Behavior Specialists and Guidance Counselors support many students. We have an excellent school climate where expectations are clearly stated and followed through on. We use the Responsive Classroom model of building relationships between the students and the adults. Our school offers core subjects as well as Unified Arts. We have a variety of after school sports, academic and enrichment activities.
We are able to offer our students excellent computer and Internet access. Students learn technology skills as they advance through the grades. Keyboarding is required in grades 3-6. Our new computer lab is now up and running. Many teachers have their own web pages on our web site.
Our goal is excellence in achievement. You can tell when you walk into our school that we are focused on students and student achievement. We invite your comments and/or visits.
