Welcome to Mrs. Wright's Class in the Discovery House
Our house is a first and second grade community. This year I am teaching first grade. I will have your child for second grade as well.
Please check out the following information which should answer many frequently asked questions.
-
Your child needs to bring a healthy nut-free snack everyday.
-
Everyone should have a labeled backpack and use it everyday.
-
We go out for recess everyday, weather permitting.
-
Each student will have a labeled cubby and coat hook to keep their belongings in.
-
Monthly menus are sent home in the school newsletters.
-
Everyone will have a yellow homework folder to bring home completed school work, homework assignments, newsletters, permission slips, etc.
-
We do celebrate birthdays! You may send in a special snack for everyone on your child's birthday. They will bring home the birthday bag which has a book to read (and return), a birthday card and pencil (to keep) and a birthday book to write in. We will share their "story" when they return the birthday bag!
-
Losing a tooth is a cause for celebration! Each child brings home the tooth bag for the first tooth they lose. It includes a certificate, tooth necklace, book to read and a tooth book to write in, telling how you lost your tooth! Please remember to return the tooth bag the next day so we can share!
-
Absent notes are required. You may also want to call the office if your child will be out for the day.
-
We ask that each child send in 2 boxes of tissues for the school year- one in September and one in January.
-
Sneakers are mandatory to participate in gym class.

Responsive Classroom
During the first six weeks of every school year, we work on developing a sense of community and caring in our classroom and house. In order
to accomplish this task, we work together on many small and large group cooperative activities, games and projects. The children
become familiar with our daily routine. We all help define, describe, model and practice our classroom rules, discuss and
represent our "Hopes and Dreams" for the school year, and establish a set of logical consequences. We use guided discovery
activities to explore appropriate ways to use and take care of all of our classroom materials. We have morning meeting everyday, which
includes greeting, songs, message, sharing and read-a-loud. The responsive classroom recognizes that the development of social skills such
as cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy and self-control (C.A.R.E.S.) sets the stage for successful and responsible learning for
all students.
